5 Simple Ways to Soothe a Newborn
Every baby cries — it’s how they communicate. But when you’re running on little sleep, it can feel overwhelming. The good news? Research (including work popularized by pediatricians like Harvey Karp and supported by AAP safe soothing guidelines) shows there are gentle, effective ways to calm your baby.
1. Swaddle Safely
A snug swaddle can mimic the womb and help calm fussiness. Always swaddle with hips loose and place baby on their back to sleep. Stop swaddling once your baby shows signs of rolling.
2. Side or Stomach (Holding - Not for Sleeping)
Holding your baby on their side or stomach against your chest can soothe crying. Remember: these positions are for holding only — for sleep, always place baby on their back in a safe sleep space.
3. Shush or White Noise
The womb is loud! White noise or gentle shushing near your baby’s ear can recreate that comforting sound environment.
4. Swing (Gentle Motion)
Gentle rocking, bouncing, or walking with your baby in your arms can help regulate their nervous system. Avoid rapid shaking — motion should always be soothing, not jarring.
5. Suck
Pacifiers, clean fingers, or feeding can provide comfort. Non-nutritive sucking is a natural calming reflex for newborns.
Final Reassurance
Crying is normal, and needing to try different strategies doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. If your baby is fed, dry, and safe, and still cries — know that this is part of newborn life. If you ever feel concerned about excessive crying, check in with your pediatrician.
